Best Potency per DollarKanna Extract 50mgDouble Wood
Double the extract per capsule, so the biggest milligram-per-dollar of any pick here.
Check price →Read review ↓Short answer: capsules win on value and evidence, gummies win on experience. Capsules give you the lowest cost per standardized dose, they're tasteless and travel-proof, and the only kanna extract with real clinical data behind it, Zembrin, is sold as a capsule. Gummies cost more per dose and add sugar, but they're pleasant, pre-portioned, and the format most likely to actually get taken by someone who won't swallow a pill.
Neither is stronger than the other, both are swallowed and both come on in roughly 30 to 60 minutes. The real choice is about your priorities: cheapest reliable dose, or the nicest way to take it. This guide lays out the tradeoffs and names the specific product to buy in each lane.
The short version
- Buy capsules if you want the best cost per standardized dose or the clinically-studied Zembrin extract, they're tasteless, pre-measured, and consistently the cheapest per dose.
- Buy gummies if you won't take a pill or want kanna to be pleasant, you pay a premium per dose and get sugar, but you also get flavor and zero friction.
- Onset is the same either way: both are swallowed, so plan on 30 to 60 minutes, gummies are not faster than capsules.
- Best gummy: Kannaflow Mood Gummies. Best capsule value: NOW Calm & Focus. Best studied capsule: Doctor's Best Calm-Z (25mg Zembrin). Best potency per dollar: Double Wood.
- Kanna raises serotonin like an SSRI, so do not combine either format with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, or other serotonergic meds without medical advice, and avoid in pregnancy.
| Product | Format | Dose / piece | Standardized? | Price | ~Cost / dose |

Gummies vs capsules at a glance, cost per standardized dose is the number that decides value.

💡 Good to know
Buy capsules if you want the best cost per standardized dose or the clinically-studied Zembrin extract, they're tasteless, pre-measured, and consistently the cheapest per dose.
01 · Best Capsule Value
Best Value
Calm & Focus (Zembrin)
The clinically-studied 25mg Zembrin dose at the lowest cost per dose of anything here.
Lab report: Uses standardized Zembrin extract (25mg); NOW publishes third-party testing and its own in-house lab data.
This is the capsule case in a single product. A 25mg Zembrin dose is the same standardized extract studied in the Chiu 2014 and Nell 2013 trials, delivered tasteless and pre-measured, with no flavor to mask potency and no sugar riding along. Because NOW is a high-volume manufacturer selling on Amazon, the per-dose math lands near a third of what a premium gummy costs.
The only thing you give up is the experience. There's nothing pleasant about swallowing a capsule, and if that's a dealbreaker for you, scroll to the gummy. But if you just want the researched dose cheaply and consistently, start here.
- Format
- Capsule
- Dose / piece
- 25mg Zembrin + GABA
- Standardization
- Zembrin (~0.4% total alkaloids)
- Axis
- Calm / focus
- Where to buy
- Amazon
What we like
- Lowest cost per standardized dose here
- The clinically-studied 25mg Zembrin dose
- Large, reputable manufacturer
- Tasteless, no sugar
Worth noting
- No experience, it's just a pill
- GABA add-on is minor
Who should buy it: Anyone who wants the clinically-studied Zembrin dose at the best price and doesn't care whether taking it is enjoyable. Also the smart starting point if you're new and want to know what the actual studied dose feels like.
What we don't like: It's a plain capsule, there's no experience to it, and the added GABA is under-dosed enough that it shouldn't be your reason to choose it.
Bottom line: If value is your first priority, this is the pick, and it's not close. You get the exact 25mg Zembrin dose used in the published trials, from a large reputable manufacturer, at well under a dollar a dose. The added GABA is a mild bonus rather than the reason to buy.
02 · Best Studied Capsule

Calm-Z (Zembrin)
A clean 25mg Zembrin capsule from an established supplement brand, the exact studied dose, nothing added.
Lab report: Standardized Zembrin extract, 25mg per capsule; Doctor's Best states the Zembrin trademark and dose on-label.
Calm-Z is the format-neutral benchmark: 25mg of Zembrin, the low-mesembrine, mesembrenone-forward standardized extract used in the published studies, in a plain capsule with nothing else in it. That single-ingredient simplicity is exactly why it's the one to reach for if your priority is matching what was actually tested rather than a proprietary blend.
It costs a little more per dose than the NOW pick, and it's a capsule, so there's no experience to it. But for the studied dose in its cleanest form, this is the reference product.
- Format
- Capsule
- Dose / piece
- 25mg Zembrin
- Standardization
- Zembrin, single ingredient
- Axis
- Calm
- Where to buy
- Amazon
What we like
- The clinically-studied Zembrin extract
- Single-ingredient, no blend
- Established supplement brand
- Tasteless, pre-dosed
Worth noting
- Costs a bit more per dose than NOW
- No experience, plain capsule
Who should buy it: Buyers who want the exact clinically-studied Zembrin dose with zero additives, from a long-standing supplement brand, and who value evidence over experience.
What we don't like: Slightly higher cost per dose than the NOW capsule for effectively the same studied dose, and, like any capsule, there's no flavor or ritual to it.
Bottom line: If you want the researched dose with no extras, this is the purest expression of it. Doctor's Best Calm-Z is a single-ingredient 25mg Zembrin capsule, the same standardized extract behind the human trials, from a brand that's been in supplements for decades.
03 · Best Potency per Dollar

Kanna Extract 50mg
Double the extract per capsule, so the biggest milligram-per-dollar of any pick here.
Lab report: 50mg extract standardized to ≥0.4% total alkaloids per capsule; Double Wood publishes COAs on request.
Double Wood's play is straightforward: 50mg of extract standardized to at least 0.4% total alkaloids, at a price that makes the milligram-per-dollar the strongest here. This is not the studied Zembrin extract, so we don't map it to the clinical dose, but it discloses a standardized alkaloid figure, which is the number that lets you dose it intelligently.
It's a capsule, so no flavor and no sugar, and it's on Amazon, so it's easy to get and return. For pure potency-per-dollar, nothing here beats it.
- Format
- Capsule
- Dose / piece
- 50mg extract (≥0.4% alkaloids)
- Standardization
- ≥0.4% total alkaloids
- Axis
- Calm
- Where to buy
- Amazon
What we like
- Best milligram-per-dollar here
- Discloses a standardized alkaloid %
- Easy to buy and return on Amazon
- Room to titrate at 50mg
Worth noting
- Too strong as a first dose
- Not the clinically-studied Zembrin extract
Who should buy it: Experienced users who want the most standardized extract per dollar and are comfortable titrating a higher per-capsule dose down or up to suit them.
What we don't like: 50mg is a lot for a beginner, and it isn't the Zembrin extract, so you can't lean on the clinical data the way you can with the two Zembrin capsules above.
Bottom line: If you want the most kanna per dollar and you're past the beginner stage, this is the value-per-milligram winner. At 50mg of standardized extract per capsule, it packs twice the extract weight of the Zembrin picks, so heavier users get more room to titrate without buying more bottles.
04 · Best Gummy

Kannaflow Mood Gummies
The clearest-labeled gummy going: a disclosed 25mg extract at 4% mesembrine, if you won't take a pill.
Lab report: Standardized to 4% mesembrine; lab-tested per batch (request COA from the brand).
Everything a capsule gives up on experience, a gummy gives back, and Kannaflow is the one we'd choose. It discloses both the 25mg extract weight and the 4% mesembrine standardization, which is more than almost any gummy on the shelf, and the flavor masks the bitterness that makes raw kanna hard to take. Pre-portioned, pleasant, zero measuring.
Onset is no different from a capsule, both are swallowed, so give it 30 to 60 minutes and don't chase it with a second too soon. If the reason you haven't stuck with kanna is that pills are unpleasant, this is the fix.
- Format
- Gummy
- Dose / piece
- 25mg extract (4% mesembrine)
- Standardization
- 4% mesembrine
- Axis
- Balanced
- Where to buy
- Amazon
What we like
- Discloses mesembrine %, not just extract weight
- Flavored, hides kanna's bitterness
- Pre-portioned, no measuring
- Best-labeled gummy available
Worth noting
- Highest cost per dose here
- Adds sugar
Who should buy it: People who won't swallow a capsule, or who simply want kanna to be pleasant and pre-portioned, and are happy to pay a per-dose premium for that.
What we don't like: Highest cost per dose of any pick here, and it adds sugar, so it's the value loser even though it's the experience winner.
Bottom line: This is the pick if a pill is a non-starter for you. The Kannaflow gummy is the rare kanna gummy that publishes a mesembrine percentage, not just an extract weight, so you actually know what you're taking, wrapped in a flavor that hides kanna's natural bitterness.
How we chose
We rank on what a brand discloses, not on hype: stated alkaloid or extract content, standardization and COA transparency, dose consistency, and cost per standardized dose. We do not run clinical trials, effects described here are what users and the published Zembrin research commonly report, framed experientially.
For a format comparison, the deciding number is cost per standardized dose, not price per bottle. A cheap jar with a huge count can still be the best value per dose, and a small premium gummy pack rarely is. Our table computes it both ways.
Questions, answered
Are kanna gummies or capsules stronger?
Neither is inherently stronger, strength is about the dose, not the format. A 25mg capsule and a 25mg gummy deliver the same amount of extract. What differs is cost (capsules are cheaper per dose), taste (gummies are flavored, capsules are tasteless), and evidence (the clinically-studied Zembrin extract is sold as a capsule). Pick your dose first, then your format.
Do kanna gummies work faster than capsules?
No. Both are swallowed and digested, so both typically take 30 to 60 minutes to come on. A gummy is not faster than a capsule. If you want a genuinely quicker onset, a chew or a tincture, where some absorption happens in the mouth, comes on faster than either.
Which is better value, kanna gummies or capsules?
Capsules, consistently. Because gummies add flavoring, sugar, and usually a boutique markup, they run roughly a dollar or more per standardized dose, while a value capsule like NOW Calm & Focus lands near a third of that. If cost per standardized dose is your priority, capsules win.
Is the clinically-studied kanna a gummy or a capsule?
A capsule. The only kanna extract with a real human clinical base is Zembrin, a standardized ~0.4%-alkaloid extract, and it's sold as capsules like Doctor's Best Calm-Z and NOW Calm & Focus. In a 3-week randomized trial, 25mg/day improved cognitive flexibility versus placebo (Chiu 2014), and a 3-month trial in 37 adults found 8mg and 25mg daily well-tolerated (Nell 2013). Gummies almost never use Zembrin.
Are kanna gummies and capsules safe?
Kanna is sold as a legal botanical supplement in the US, and a 3-month clinical safety study of the standardized extract reported it was well-tolerated (Nell 2013). The most important caution applies to both formats: kanna raises serotonin, so it should not be combined with SSRIs, SNRIs, MAOIs, or other serotonergic medications without medical advice, and it's not recommended in pregnancy. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA; kanna is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. None of this is medical advice, talk to a clinician about your situation.
